California and Virginia lottery reports show billions in sales and education funding

Official figures from California and Virginia show multibillion-dollar lottery sales and more than $2.8 billion in reported education funding across the two states' latest fiscal-year reports.

California and Virginia lottery financial reports show multibillion-dollar sales and major education contributions in their most recently detailed fiscal-year figures, while Massachusetts highlighted the wider beneficiary funding generated by U.S. lotteries.

The California State Lottery recorded sales approaching $9 billion in fiscal year 2024-25 and contributed more than $1.9 billion to the state's public schools, according to its annual financial report.

Instant tickets were California's largest sales category. Scratchers generated almost $6.9 billion and accounted for more than 77% of the Lottery's sales during the fiscal year.

Draw games also represented a substantial part of the California total. Powerball and Mega Millions combined for nearly $1 billion in state sales during fiscal year 2024-25. Players looking for current drawings can check the latest Powerball results and latest Mega Millions results.

In Virginia, the Virginia Lottery said sales rose from $5.521 billion in fiscal year 2024 to $5.771 billion in fiscal year 2025. The Lottery generated more than $901 million for K-12 public education in fiscal year 2025.

The Virginia Lottery said its fiscal year 2026 sales projection took into account an expanding competitive gaming environment. The projection indicates that the Lottery is considering changes in the broader gaming market as it plans for the coming year.

Nationally, the Massachusetts State Lottery said U.S. lotteries generated more than $30.6 billion for beneficiaries in fiscal year 2024. That figure measures funding for beneficiaries, rather than a nationwide lottery sales total or a nationwide sales-growth rate.

The available state reports document strong sales in California and year-over-year growth in Virginia, but they do not establish a single nationwide comparison of lottery sales against other gaming sectors.
