By Irene Rotondo | IRotondo@masslive.comThe rumors of favoritism toward the eastern part of the state from the Massachusetts State Lottery may finally be laid to rest.Out of all Bay State lottery retailers over the past year, there were three stores that sold multiple winning tickets worth $1 million or more — and two of those stores were located in Western Massachusetts. “We often hear that large prizes are only won in bigger cities, but this ... illustrates that it isn’t the case,” said Mark William Bracken, Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery. The luckiest location in the state this year to buy lottery tickets was at Old South Diner on Nantucket. As a convenience shop with an attached restaurant space, the shop sold one $2 million and two $1 million tickets, all by the end of August. The only other two lottery retail agents to sell more than one winning $1 million ticket in 2024 were located in Sheffield and in East Longmeadow.Silk’s Variety, at 107 Main St. in Sheffield, sold three winning $1 million tickets in 2024. Silk’s is the only lottery agent in the 3,300-person town located just miles from the New York border, according to the lottery. It’s a multi-generational, family-owned small business and an original Massachusetts State Lottery retail agent from 1972.“We truly are a lucky store,” said Susan Silk, store owner.“With over 50 years as a lottery agent, we could never have imagined selling three $1 million prize-winning tickets in one year ... we are so excited for the winners and are grateful for our loyal customers who have supported us for so many years,” Silk said. The first of the three $1 million prizes was claimed on Jan. 26, when a Sheffield resident won $1 million from the “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” scratch ticket game. The second was from the “$4,000,000 Monopoly Jackpot” game, after a Great Barrington resident claimed $1 million on April 9. Finally, another person who lives in Sheffield won $1 million on Nov. 18 from a “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” ticket they bought at Silk’s.“We are thrilled for the Silk family, who has been with us from the very beginning ... With about 150 total prizes of $1 million or more statewide each year, having three of them from one store in a small town like Sheffield is pretty amazing,” said Bracken. The third-luckiest lottery retailer in Massachusetts from 2024 was a Pride Station & Store located at 13 North Main St. in East Longmeadow, where two winning $1 million tickets were sold this year. In total, there were 139 scratch tickets worth $1 million claimed in 2024. Seven lottery players won $1 million playing Powerball and four won $1 million playing Mega Millions, while two seven-figure Megabucks jackpots — $5.37 million and $2.64 million — were also won this year.As of Dec. 26, the largest lottery prize won in Massachusetts this year was worth $1 million a year for life. The prize was from the lottery’s “Lifetime Millions” scratch ticket game. The winner claimed their prize through a trust on July 10, and opted to receive a one-time payment of $15.4 million.Mega Millions jackpot swells to $1.15 billion after no Christmas Eve winnersMass.
